This was the ideal AirBNB experience, with all the comforts of home hidden just a few minutes from the beach. We really made this our home for the week so long review incoming *airhorn*. Sahira and Freddy were wonderful hosts, meeting us at the door with flowers, local coffee and beer, and sticking around for a late checkout so we could squeeze in one last trip to the tide pools. Our party was pretty busy throughout the week with local friends and we didn't get to interact much IRL, but the hosts are avid surfers and happy to share tips for new visitors. The home is located 3 minutes up a hill from the main road of Playa Carmen. Its steep and can be daunting during the midday sun, but also means you're away from the noise and neverending dust of the main drag. Plus, hiking is part of the Costa Rican (URL HIDDEN) ATV rentals (not sure of the company name, but our contact named Alex was great) were right at the bottom of this hill. Quads aren't necessary to get up and down, but made exploring the area so much fun - especially the back road to Montezuma with its crazy turns and mini river crossings. We took a fishing trip out of Malpais and the casa kitchen was well equipped with cookware to prepare the day's catch. BYO basics like oil, salt etc. Groceries (and more beer) were also close by with Super Ronny's#1 at the end of the street. No matter how many cervezas you had at Kikas on Thursday, make sure to get down there for the weekly produce delivery Friday morning. The hungover walk is worth it for the best selection. The family lives downstairs, but concrete floors made it feel entirely separate. Perfect for our early morning missions and late night returns. Besides some joking around with the kids as we struggled with our ATVs, I think we heard more of the local wildlife than each other. No monkey or sloth sightings on the patio for me but maybe you'll get lucky. Wifi was good even with 4 of us in use, and the AC reliably frigid for hiding out in the afternoon. I'd love to return to Malpais one day and try sleeping in a rustic cabina by the beach to escape my online job...but in the remote work world, this is the perfect fit. We'd be back in a second. Thanks again, Sahira & Freddy!
